From Hiroshima to the world

Mr. Naoya Takayama is a fourth-generation craftsman in the Hiroshima Buddhist altar tradition, a historic craft of Hiroshima. The art of lacquering has been carefully preserved and refined over generations.
We create works that honor traditional techniques while pursuing the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship.
Despite the devastation of the atomic bomb, Edo-era craftsmanship has endured and continues to be passed down to this day.

□ Profile
Naoya Takayama, born on January 26, 1981, in Hiroshima City, comes from a family with a long tradition of crafting Buddhist altars and ornaments. After graduating from the Department of Buddhist Studies at the Junior College of Ryukoku University, he underwent apprenticeship training at Kyoroiro Otsuka, where he learned black lacquer techniques and engaged in the production and repair of Buddhist altars and ornaments.
At 28, he returned to Hiroshima and gained recognition for his remarkable restoration of a local temple.
In 2018, he began crafting Hiroshima lacquerware and established the Naoya Takayama brand with the vision of “blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation,” and has since won numerous awards for his work. At the request of the mayor of Hiroshima, he produced the Hiroshima lacquerware “Den/Shiosai” that would be presented to world leaders. At the request of Mrs. Yuko Kishida, wife of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, he created Hiroshima lacquerware “Akebono” to be presented to spouses of world leaders at the G7 Summit held in May 2023.
